About

Sumie Tachibana, owner of Felinus Fabrics

Hi, I'm Sumie, and welcome to Felinus Fabrics!

I'm a fashion designer with 15 years in the industry: 10 in New York and 5 in Los Angeles. Along the way I've worked as a designer, fashion design instructor, art director, photographer, fashion show director, wardrobe stylist, and fabric buyer for Elie Tahari. I've been running Felinus Fabrics for 12 years now, with lots of support from my husband and our daughter.

Why deadstock?

Working in fashion, I kept coming across beautiful fabrics, trims and notions that never make it to the public. Deadstock is the leftover material from fashion production. It's often designer quality and usually only available in small amounts. Most of mine comes from the Los Angeles garment district, with some from New York's. I started Felinus Fabrics to give sewists, makers and small designers access to these hard-to-find materials at fair prices, and to keep them out of landfills.

What to expect

Every item is hand-picked with a designer's eye. Fewer than 5 items in the shop are regularly restocked. Everything else is limited deadstock, so when it's gone, it's usually gone.

Looking for something you don't see? I have many items that aren't listed yet, so send me a message and I'll check what I have.

I pack every order myself in Sugar Land, Texas, reuse packaging whenever I can, and keep shipping costs low. US orders of $50 or more ship free.

About the name

Felinus means "cat-like" in Latin. The shop is named for my dear cat, Chu-Chi, a handsome and adventurous orange tabby who was my best friend for 22 years.

Have a question about a fabric or an order? Send me a message. I read and answer every one personally. To see my own designs, visit sumietachibana.com.

Thank you for supporting a small, independent shop!
